How Much Does a Custom Web App Cost in 2025? A Transparent Breakdown

We publish our actual pricing tiers, explain what drives cost up or down, and help you figure out what budget you actually need before reaching out to any dev shop.

One of the most common questions we get before a kickoff call is some version of: "We have a budget of X — is that realistic?"

The honest answer is: it depends. But that answer is only useful if we explain what it depends on. So here's our full, transparent breakdown of what custom web app development actually costs in 2025 — including the numbers we use internally at GreenField Dev.

The Short Answer

Project TypeTypical Range
Marketing website$3,000 – $8,000
Simple web app (MVP)$8,000 – $25,000
Mid-complexity web app$25,000 – $75,000
Enterprise / complex platform$75,000 – $250,000+

These aren't made-up numbers. They reflect real project timelines, real engineering hours, and the real cost of doing things right.

What Drives Cost Up

1. Custom Design vs. a Component Library

If you need a bespoke brand experience — custom illustrations, pixel-perfect UI, animation, design system — you're looking at 2–4 additional weeks of design work before a single line of code gets written. That alone can add $5,000–$15,000 to a project.

If you're comfortable with a well-configured design system (like we use, built on shadcn/ui and Tailwind), you can move faster and spend less.

2. Third-Party Integrations

Every integration with an external service — payment processors, CRMs, marketing platforms, analytics tools, authentication providers — takes time. Not just to connect, but to handle edge cases, errors, and data mapping correctly.

A Stripe integration done right takes 1–2 days. A bidirectional Salesforce sync can take 2–3 weeks.

3. Roles and Permissions

"We need different users to see different things" is one of the most deceptively complex requirements in software. A robust role-based access control system can easily add 2–4 weeks of work depending on the number of roles and what each one controls.

4. Real-Time Features

Chat, live notifications, collaborative editing, dashboards with live data — anything real-time requires WebSocket infrastructure, state management, and a lot of edge case handling. Budget an extra 20–40% if real-time is core to your product.

5. Mobile Parity

If the app needs to work perfectly on mobile — not just responsively, but as a native-feeling experience with offline support, push notifications, or app store distribution — you're looking at either a React Native build or significant extra effort on the web side.

What Drives Cost Down

Starting with a clear scope

The single biggest cost driver we see is scope changes mid-project. Every week of delay from a pivot costs roughly the same as a week of building. Coming in with a well-defined feature list — even a rough one — saves time and money.

Prioritizing the MVP

Not everything has to be in v1. We always push clients to identify the smallest version of the product that gets real users in front of it. The learnings from those first users are worth more than any feature you could add upfront.

Using what already exists

We don't reinvent wheels. Auth, payments, email, file storage — there are excellent managed services for all of these. Using them instead of building custom saves weeks of work and gives you battle-tested infrastructure.

GreenField Dev's Pricing

We're a small, senior team — two engineers, zero offshore handoffs, no account managers padding invoices. Our rates reflect that.

  • Web development projects: $5,000 – $50,000+
  • Mobile app projects: $8,000 – $50,000+
  • Custom software / enterprise: $10,000 – $100,000+
  • API development: $3,000 – $25,000+

We work on fixed-scope contracts for well-defined projects, and time-and-materials for projects that need more flexibility. We'll tell you which we recommend after a scoping call.

What You Actually Get for Your Budget

$5,000–$15,000

A focused, well-built web presence or a lightweight MVP. Typically: a Next.js marketing site with a CMS, or a single-feature web app (a booking tool, a simple SaaS dashboard, a client portal). Design from a component library. One or two integrations.

$15,000–$40,000

A real product. Multiple user roles, a backend API, database design, authentication, 3–5 integrations, custom UI. This is the range where most early-stage startup MVPs land.

$40,000–$100,000+

A platform. Complex workflows, admin tooling, reporting, real-time features, mobile support, compliance requirements (HIPAA, SOC 2). Enterprise clients and funded startups typically work in this range.

Before You Budget, Do This

  1. Write down every feature you want — not a spec, just a list.
  2. Circle the ones that are required for launch — these are your MVP scope.
  3. Estimate how many users you expect in year one — this affects infrastructure decisions.
  4. Identify any compliance requirements — HIPAA, PCI, accessibility (WCAG) all add cost.

Bring that to your first call with any development shop, including us. It'll get you a more accurate estimate and show you're serious.

The Bottom Line

Custom software costs what it costs because good engineers take time, and time is money. The shops that quote you dramatically less are either cutting corners, hiding costs in change orders, or offshore in ways that create communication overhead you'll feel.

We're not the cheapest option. We're the option that delivers what we say we'll deliver, communicates clearly, and builds things that last.
